Thayer County Health Services Upgrades Diagnostic Capabilities with New Large Bore MRI

December 12, 2025

Thayer County Health Services (TCHS) is proud to announce a major enhancement to its diagnostic imaging services with the upgrade of a new Large Bore MRI machine. This upgrade reflects TCHS’s ongoing commitment to improving access to advanced healthcare close to home for residents of Thayer County and neighboring communities.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to generate detailed 3D images of organs, tissues, and other internal structures without the use of radiation. Traditionally, some patients find MRI scans uncomfortable due to the narrow tunnel of older machines. Large bore MRI systems address this challenge by offering:

  • A wider opening, creating a more comfortable experience — especially helpful for larger patients or those who experience claustrophobia.
  • Improved patient comfort, making it physically easier to get into and remain still during scans.
  • Enhanced diagnostic capabilities, enabling high-quality images that help providers make timely and accurate medical decisions.

The Large Bore MRI replaces TCHS’s previous MRI setup, representing an investment in both technology and the patient experience. TCHS’s Radiology Department has long offered a wide range of imaging services, including CT, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine, and PET/CT, as part of its comprehensive diagnostic services.

With the new MRI upgrade, patients no longer have to travel long distances for cutting-edge imaging services. This enhancement supports earlier detection and better management of a variety of health conditions, from neurological disorders and spinal injuries to joint abnormalities and soft tissue evaluation, right in their local hospital.

TCHS’s mission centers on providing high-quality, compassionate care for everyone in the region. The installation of the Large Bore MRI aligns with that mission by expanding access to advanced imaging that previously may have required travel to larger cities.

Hospital leadership and staff hope the upgraded MRI will help patients feel more at ease during their diagnostic visits while also expanding TCHS’s ability to support providers with detailed clinical information for better treatment planning.
